WHAT IS REIKI

A BRIEF OVERVIEW

Reiki is both a powerful and gentle healing technique in the form of using spiritually guided life force energy from our Highest Power.  This energy is transmitted through the hands of a certified Reiki Practitioner into the client.  The energy is not guided by the Practitioner, but the energy has it’s own innate wisdom to guide itself to wherever it is needed in the body.  Neither the Practitioner nor the client can direct this energy as it goes where it is needed.  This is the non physical energy that animates all living things.  As long as something is alive, it has life force circulating through it and surrounding it.  When it dies, the life force departs.   If your life force is low, or if there is restriction in its flow, you will be more vulnerable to illness.  When it is high and flowing freely, you are less likely to get sick.  Life force plays an important role in everything we do.  It animates the body and also is the primary energy of our emotions, thoughts, and spiritual life.  It is the God-consciousness called Rei that guides the life force called Ki in the practice we call Reiki.  While Reiki is spiritual in nature, it is not a religion.  Because Reiki comes from God, many people find that using Reiki puts them more in touch with the experience of their religion rather than having only an intellectual concept of it.

A Reiki treatment feels like a wonderful glowing radiance that flows through you and surrounds you.  Reiki treats the whole person including the body, emotions, mind and spirit and creates many beneficial effects, including relaxation, feelings of peace, security and well-being.  It has aided in healing virtually every known illness and injury including serious problems such as multiple sclerosis, heart disease, cancer, skin problems, cuts and bruises, broken bones, headache, colds and flu, sore throat, sunburn, fatigue, insomnia, impotence, poor memory, lack of confidence, etc.  Reiki will improve the results of all medical treatment, acting to reduce negative side effects, shorten healing time, reduce or eliminate pain, reduce stress and help create optimism.   Our body is composed not only of physical elements such as muscles, bones, nerves, arteries, organs, glands, etc; it also has the subtle energy system through which this “life force energy” flows.  The subtle energy system is composed of energy “bodies” which surround our physical body and assist us in processing our thoughts and emotions.  The energy bodies have energy centers called “chakras”, doorways for our consciousness, which work somewhat like valves that allow life force to circulate through the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual bodies.

They are openings through which our attitudes and belief systems enter into and create our mind/body structure.  We also have energy meridians and nadas.  These are like rivers, or streams which carry our life force energy throughout our physical body, to nourish us and assist in balancing our body’s systems and functions.

This is why our physical body is alive because of the “life force energy” that is flowing through it.  One thing that disrupts and weakens the flow of “life force energy” is stress.  Stress is often caused by conflicting thoughts and feelings that get lodged in one’s subtle energy system.  These include fear, worry, doubt, anger, anxiety, etc.  Medical research has determined that continual stress can block the body’s natural ability to repair, regenerate and protect itself.  The American Institute of Stress estimates that 75%-95% of all visits to the doctors are the results of reaction to stress.

Reiki is being used in hospitals and clinics across America.  Hospitals are experiencing a need to reduce costs while at the same time, improve patient care.  Reiki is being used to balance patient energy in the operating room during open-heart surgeries and heart transplants.  It has been reported that none of the 11 heart patients so treated experienced the usual post-operative depression, no post-operative pain or leg weakness for the bypass patients, and no patient experienced organ rejection with the transplant patients.   Some hospitals are incorporating it into their roster of patient services, often with their own Reiki-trained physicians, nurses and support staff.  At this point, Reiki is not covered by insurance, but companies that complementary care is viable and will save them money since a survey found that one in every three Americans have used such care, spending over 14 billion out-of-pocket dollars are on alternative health care in 1990 alone.  There is so much more to know and learn about this ancient method of healing.  It would be wonderful to have every person give themselves this great “Gift of Reiki”, so they can use on themselves and share it with others as well.
